I'm Running Out Of Candidates!

01.31.08 | Comment?

As a progressive, I am running out of candidates to support in this election cycle.

My first choice was Al Gore, but he didn't run. So be it.

Then, I really liked Richardson because he has more experience than the rest of the field. But he had no support and dropped out.

After New Hampshire, given that the field was already narrowing, I decides to look beyond the mainstream candidates and I found myself liking Dennis Kucinich's message more than anyone else's. No, I didn't think he had a chance, but being from a late primary state, I didn't expect my vote to matter anyway. Then he dropped out.

Okay. Down to three biggies and Mike Gravel. I'm afraid I spent my idealism trying to convince Kucinich was worth supporting. I was fresh out. So, Obama, Clinton, or Edwards, it is. I liked Edwards' populist approach to things, so I supported him. And we know how that worked out.

So, I am now down to Clinton whom I do not like, but I think may be electable, and Obama whom I do like, but suspect may be unelectable. To be clear, my dislike of Senator Clinton is not because of her personality. Yes, she is divisive, but that never bothered me until she became a senator. My dislike of her is because I am not convinced she would be much different than Bush. She is a hawk and we need less of that.

So, I guess I am an Obama supporter by process of elimination. Don't get me wrong. I like a lot of what Obama says and I do think he is more likely to unite to the country than any of the other yahoos running. But I am not convinced he can win. I look at the demographics and I see a lot of Clinton winning the white vote and Obama winning the black vote. And, well, all the republican candidates are white and there are more whites than blacks in this country. No, the math shouldn't be that simple. It REALLY shouldn't be.

But it might be.

Here's hoping I am wrong.
