A Yuletide Blaze

12.08.08 | 1 Comment

We stopped by my sister-in-law's house today to pick up my elder son. As we climbed out of the car, we noticed a fire truck on the cross street a couple of houses down. Nothing seemed amiss, but we craned our necks for any sign of trouble. It wasn't until I happened to glance upwards that the reason for their presence became apparent.

High atop a telephone poll, an electrical transformer was in full blaze. So, we let my sister-in-law (and niece and son) know what was going on and we all wandered around in the street watching. My wife seems to be lacking the rubbernecking gene, so she cleverly stayed insider where it was warm; it was maybe 30° outside. Since I had nothing better to do, I decided to pull out my enV and take some low res video. After a minute of so of this, the firefighters decided I was getting too close and they put up some yellow tape to make me behave myself.

Anyway, here's the video for what it was worth. Interestingly, due to the wonders of grid topology, my sister-in-law never lost power, while neighbors from several blocks away had gone black.
